One of the main problems dogging every emerging field, and particularly those operating on the boundary between specialists and general users, are the many different technological approaches and aesthetic assumptions that characterize the field, resulting in many ad-hoc and bespoke solutions. Research groups or individual artists, while sometimes quite advanced in their own work, cannot therefore collaborate efficiently. Artistic works sometimes use technologies that cannot be disseminated without their own software support staff – and run the risk of their lifetime being tied to one developer or one institution. In the TENOR Network, we explore the possibility of comprehensive solutions that can cater to a diversity of approaches, and of best practices for similar problems – all of this with the goal to make TENOR practices exchangeable, transportable and sustainable.
